Are Smart Sweets Candy Gummies Keto Friendly? Keto Dessert Recipes

Are Smart Sweets keto friendly?

Though I would recommend Smart Sweets to someone who is simply on a low-carb diet, I would not consider Smart Sweets to be the best option for a keto diet. Smart Sweets makes a variety of gummies each made without added sugar. In fact, there are only 3 grams of sugar in one whole bag of Smart Sweets. In addition, I personally found each flavor to be surprisingly tasty.

However, if you are following a strict ketogenic diet that allows only 20-25 grams of net carbs per day you don’t have much room to work with. That said, some varieties like the Sweet Fish still contain 7 net carbs per bag. The gummy bears, on the other hand, contain only 5 net carbs per bag. This is still high however when you are only allowed 20 per day.

You could, however, point out the fact that even some of my keto dessert recipes contain up to 5 net carbs per serving as well. My keto chocolate peanut butter ice cream, for example, contains 5.81 net carbs per serving. That said, it also contains over 38 grams of keto friendly fats to go along with it. This makes it much easier to stick to keto friendly macros for the day.

Smart Sweets, on the other hand, contain o grams of fat and 0-3 grams of protein per bag, so most of the total calories from smart sweets are in the form of carbohydrates. This can make things difficult because so many keto friendly foods contain some amount of carbs that can quickly add up to your total daily allowance.

You have to remember that a keto diet is not only a low-carb but also a high-fat diet. Most people following keto will get about 70 -75 percent of their calories from fat, about 20 percent from protein, and less than 10 percent from carbs. That said, an ideal keto snack should contain a good amount of fat and a small number of carbs.

What If I Work Smart Sweets Into My Net Carbs?

As long as you get enough fat and work the carbs from Smart Sweets into your daily allowance you can probably get away with having some of these gummies on a keto diet. All I am trying to say is that though lower in carbs than typical gummies they still contain enough to make things difficult.

I do not, however, want this article to come off as a criticism on Smart Sweets. In fact, I applaud them for making a gummy bear that is not loaded with sugar. They make a great product that tastes amazing and is free from artificial flavors.

In addition, for anyone just trying to keep their carbs down or simply counting calories, these are a great option to satisfy a sweet tooth. They are low-sugar, low-fat, and low in calories. So though they are an obvious choice for some diets, they are not my first pick for a ketogenic diet.
